Many Family members have gone to war for their country. This page has information on a few of those warriors. Not all are included, I have not found info on all our family warriors. Some family members allied with my tribe of BAYLESSes are also listed including BENNETT and TUNNELL.

 


REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOTS

 

Benjamin Bayless (1752-1819) m. Polly Latemore. Entered the service as a volunteer from NC and was taken prisoner while crossing the Catawba River, 1780. He was born in VA. DAR Lineage Books Vol.83, 1910, p.192, members #82503, #87531, #51241, #76875.

 

Major Platt Bayless (1733-1778) m. Phoebe Lewis. Served as a captain in Col. Stephen Hunt's Battalion of NJ State Troops and was a major at the Battle of Long Island. He died of smallpox in the service. He was born in England. DAR Lineage Books Vol.89, 1911, p. 273, member #88862, #128063. (NOTE: Member #128063 shows the Major as married in 1812 to FrancesMcGary.)

 

Lt. Samuel Bayless (1736-1808) m. Elisabeth Bayless in 1757. Enlisted, 1775, in the Maryland Militia, 2nd Lt., and in 1778 served as Lt. He was born in Long Island and died in Maryland. DAR Lineage Books Vol.96, 1912, p.156, members #95482, #102284, #107711, #123713.

 

Nicholas Bayless (1719-1807) m. Elizabeth Park (1717-1791) in 1738. A patriot. He was a representative in the General Court of Dighton, Mass., where he died. He was born in England. DAR Lineage Books Vol.125, 1916, p.151-152, member #124498.

 

Frederick Bayless (1741-1808) m. 2nd, Hannah Broron (1752-1821) in 1804. Served as a PVT in Capt. Edward Blake's Co., Col. George William's Regmt. which marched on the Rhode Island Alarm. He was born in Uxbridge and died in Sturbridge, Mass. DAR Lineage Books Vol.125,1916, p.151-152, member #124498.

 

Daniel Bayless (1764-1829) m. Polly Van Hyce (1763-1830) in 1781. Served as a PVT in the Middlesex Co. Militia. He was born in Middlesex Co., NJ and died in Auburn, NY. DAR Lineage Books Vol.127, 1916, p.143, member #126452, #47656.

 

William Tunnell (1731-1776) m. 3rd, Elizabeth Evans in 1767. He raised a company to defend the coast of Delaware Bay. He was born in Accomac Co., VA and died in Dagsborough, Delaware. DAR Lineage Books Vol.148, 1919, p.217, member #147681.

 

Benjamin Bayless (1752-1819) m. Sarah Hayles. Served as a PVT in the NC troops and in 1778, took the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity in Granville Co., NC. He was born in VA. DAR Lineage Books Vol.153, 1920, p.283, member #1529021.

Stephen Tunnell (1753-1828). Son of William Tunnell and Ann Howard. Married 1776 to Kezia Money. Fought in the Battle of Long Island. From Notable Southern Families by Zella Armstrong.

 THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES 1861-1865

 

James W. Bennett, Co.B,10th TX Regmt. Enlisted 1861, died in Atlanta July 22, 1864. 1st Lt., Capt.

 Elson G. Bennett. CSA 1862, 15th TX Regmt. Served in MO and AR. In 1863 he was captured at Arkansas Post and taken to Camp Douglas, Chicago. He was exchanged 3 mos. later and returned to his regiment. Again in 1863 he was captured at Missionaty Ridge near Chattanooga. He was taken to Rock Island, IL. He was paroled March 4, 1865. (NOTE: Elson was the father of Ann Elizabeth Bennett, mother of Alma Hudson Bayless.)

Bayless, Joseph A. - PVT Jan.1, 1862, appointed musician. Killed at Atlanta, GA, July 22, 1864. Co.B, 1st Conferate Regmt. Infantry, Army of TN, CSA, Catoosa Co., GA, Ringgold Vols. Information from Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 Vol.1, p.12. (NOTE: I can't connect this man to our family. His name, however, is the same and he was from Ringgold where our family lived in 1860.)

R.B. Bayless, Ringgold, GA. Received mortal wounds on VA battlefields and died in a hospital. Wife Mary Reed Bayless also died during the war. Survived by children including Wm.H. Bayless. From Sartain: History of Walker Co Vol.I. R.B. Bayless was buried at Charlottesville, VA.

Bayles, David B. Son of John Bayles, David was born Dec. 15, 1824. He married Melvina Griffin. He died at Knoxville in 1863 while serving in the Union Army. The Bayles Families of Long Island and New Jersey by Howard Green Bayles, 1944, #348, p.58.

Bayless, Henry E. Son of John Leroy Bayless. He was born July 28, 1841 and died Oct.29, 1863 in the Battle of Lookout Mountain while serving in the Union Army. The Bayles Families of Long Island and New Jersey by Howard Green Bayles, 1944, #474, p.78.

Bayless, Samuel Lewis. Son of Lott Southard Bayless. He was born Jan.11, 1840 and died Feb.13, 1907. He lived in Indiana. He was a Sgt. Major of the Indiana Vol. Inf. The Bayles Families of Long Island and New Jersey by Howard Green Bayles, 1944, #379r, p.89.

Bayles, Aaron B. Son of Robert Bayles. He was born July 24, 1841. He married Mary A. Henium in 1870. Aaron served all through the war, first as a Pvt. and later as a Lt. The Bayles Families of Long Island and New Jersey by Howard Green Bayles, 1944, #483, p.102-103.


THE BATTLE OF THE ALAMO

 

"Bayliss, Joseph: Age, 28; rank, private; came to Texas from Tennessee in January, 1836. Sources: Robertson, 781, 924; Milam, 1508; I Milam, 1773; Muster Rolls, p.117; Court of Claims, Special Vouchers, No. 1323. This last document shows Joseph Bayliss was a single man; that his father, John B. Bayliss, and his mother Patience Bayliss, were his heirs; that they lived at Clarksville, Tennessee; and that Bayliss belonged to 'Colonel Crockett's Band'."
