Welcome to the TUNNELL Family Page ! The TUNNELL and other associated families in America are descendants of French Huguenots who fled France to avoid the persecution of Protestants in that country. The earliest known members of the TUNNELL family were named TONNELIER. I believe that Guillaume TONNELIER, a Frechman, was my ancestor. Guillaume left France about 1700 and settled in Yorkshire England. His wife (name unknown) and infant son William went with him to England. Little William had at least two brothers,who also came to America, John and James. The young sons of Guillaume Tonnelier grew to maturity in England. William married Lady Ann Howard and John married Lady Scarbrough, a widow. The TONNELIER brothers and their wives left England for America about 1735-1740. I have been unable to discover how these people came to America. They settled in the state of Virginia where they began to raise families. In America, the surname TONNELIER became TUNNEL and TUNNELL. Many descendants of these brothers live in America today and can be found in most states.
The MONNETT Family were also French Huguenots who fled France and settled in England. Later members of this family also arrived in America. The PILLOT family, also Huguenots, became allied to the MONNETT family through marriage. The PILLOTs also came to America. The many descendants of the MONNETT/PILLOT family use many different spellings of their surname but most can trace their ancestry back to the MONNETTs of France. The surnames of descendants in America today include: MONNETT, MONNETTE, MONET, MANET, MONIE, MONEY, MANNE, MONAY, etc. Descendants of the PILLOT family include the surnames PILLOT, PILOT, PILO, PILOUGH, etc.
